If your New Year’s Resolution is to get outside more, Arizona State Parks and Trails is hosting more than a dozen special guided hikes around the state on Jan. 1.
The hikes are part of an annual, nationwide First Day Hikes event organized by the National Association of State Park Directors.
“It basically just encourages people to start the new year outdoors in a healthy way and hopefully enjoy what the state parks have to offer,” said Arizona State Parks And Trails deputy assistant director Michelle Thompson.
Thompson said this year, New Year’s Day guided hikes are scheduled at 16 state parks across Arizona.
“Anywhere from Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, to Catalina State Park in Tucson and all the way up to our newest park, Rockin’ River Ranch State Park in Camp Verde,” Thompson said.
The hikes vary in length and difficulty. The agency says participating in the hiking activities provides an opportunity to learn “about the plants, wildlife, geology, and history of Arizona’s parks.”
Park entry fees apply and all hikes are subject to weather. Hike information and weather updates are listed at azstateparks.com/first-day-hikes.
The agency suggests people bring water, wear proper footwear, use sun protection and take other precautions before participating in the hikes.
