Funeral services with full honors will be held Friday for Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Captain Scott Leatham, who died on Dec. 19.

Leatham had been with the Tempe Fire Department since 2013.

"He was a dedicated public servant, a community leader and he really enjoyed making Tempe a better, safer place for everyone," said Interim Fire Chief Darrell Duty.

Leatham leaves behind a wife and two children. He was 39 years old and died from a rare form of cancer. The Tempe Fire Department said that the cancer was connected to his work.

The nonprofit Firefighter Cancer Support Network reports firefighters do suffer higher rates of cancer than the general public and reports about two-thirds of line-of-duty deaths are caused by cancer.
