"The Phoenix" mural was unveiled at the Rental Car Center next to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Oct. 22, 2021.

Phoenix is looking for artists to create a mural for a community health center downtown. Applications are being accepted from artists who live in Phoenix with preference for one who has lived experience with HIV/AIDS.

The public mural will be displayed at the Parsons Center for Health and Wellness along Central Avenue near Roosevelt. The goal is to raise awareness about HIV prevention, testing and treatment and reduce stigma around HIV.

Artists are asked to submit a portfolio that shows their ability to compose, design and execute large-scale murals. The $60,000 contract must cover all fees, materials, installation and anti-graffiti coating for a mural that can survive the desert climate for at least five years.

The commission is through Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, in partnership with the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Southwest Center, One N Ten and Aunt Rita's Foundation and with support provided by Artlink Inc.

Applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. Jan. 8. The chosen design will be announced in February. More information can be found via Artlink Inc.
