Six burn patients from last week’s deadly fireworks explosion in Hawaii are now in the care of the Valleywise Health Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix.

The patients were flown in Saturday with the help of a military transport plane.

The Valleywise Health facility had offered its services as Hawaii’s lone burn unit did not have capacity to handle treatment.

One patient suffered burns on nearly 80% of their body. While many of the details related to their health are confidential, officials say they are recovering well. All are still receiving help breathing and five are in a medically induced coma.

Dr. Kevin Foster is director of the Arizona Burn Center.

“There were a lot of explosions and a lot of particles flying through the air. And almost everybody has multiple projectile injuries," he said.

Foster says the patients are expected to stay 6 to 12 months.
