About 3,500 acres of land in La Paz County will be host to a new solar project as part of a new lease with the Bureau of Land Management.

The solar project, which will be developed by Jove Solar, will generate enough electricity to power up to 180,000 homes per year.

Derek Eysenbach with BLM said the land is south of the I-10 near Tonopah, and Jove’s solar project will put it to good use:

”The current uses out there are essentially dispersed camping; maybe some people go out there to hike around or something; there’s been some livestock raising out there,” he said. “But by and large, this is going to be a whole new use and an economic generator.”

He said once it’s complete, the facility will look like a farming operation, with racks of solar panels connected by tubes. They’ll also move with the sun throughout the day, to maximize power generation.

Construction is expected to begin this spring, and the project should be generating power that will serve the region by June of 2026.
