Arizona communities to receive $46 million to improve rail crossing safety

Communities across Arizona will be receiving over $46 million in grants to improve railroad crossing safety.

The funds will go to projects in Yuma, Marana, Gilbert and on Hualapai Tribal lands.

The funds will go to remove what are called at-grade railroad crossings. Those are crossings where the railroad is at the same height as the street.

The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The legislation includes money earmarked for the removal of at-grade crossings, which the Federal Railroad Administration says accidents at them are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in the United States.

In a written statement, Sen. Mark Kelly said the money will improve the movement of goods and ensure a safer transportation system.
