A flu vaccine.

It’s been an extremely busy flu season in Arizona, but there are signs viral transmission is slowing down.

Arizona has confirmed more than 34,000 cases of flu so far this season – more than twice as many cases as would be expected for this time of year. But Dr. Joel Terriquez, medical director for the bureau of infectious diseases with the Arizona Department of Health Services, said caseloads now appear to be coming down from a peak.

“We’re still higher than the usual, typical season,” Terriquez said. “Even though it’s still a concern based on how high some of these numbers are, the trend seems to be positive.”

Terriquez said flu cases dropped about 30% just in the last week, and COVID-19 and RSV cases are now dropping, too.

But, he said, it’s too soon for Arizonans to let their guard down. He still recommends precautions like handwashing, staying home if sick and getting up to date on vaccines.
