The Tonto National Forest will have its first “fee-free” day of the year on Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Tonto National Forest offices will be closed due to the federal holiday, but people can still recreate for free that day if they choose to. The Forest Service offers places for activities like hiking and biking. While many of the facilities and services associated with those are free, some require fees or permits to help maintain, and improve national forests and grasslands.
The Federal Lands Recreation Act works with other federal land management agencies to waive those fees on certain days.
The waiver does not apply to overnight camping fees at developed campgrounds.
The next fee-free day will be on National Get Outdoors Day, which is June 14.
Normal business hours will resume Tuesday.
