Impaired driving enforcement will be kicked up this weekend ahead of Super Bowl Sunday and the Phoenix open.

Jesse Torrez, director of the Arizona governor's office of highway safety, said statewide patrols are looking for signs of impaired driving.

“These officers are especially trained for impaired driving, but they’re looking for any traffic offenses,” said Torrez.

Torrez said an East Valley task force will work around the WM Phoenix Open. On Sunday, the patrols will be statewide. He says if you decide to drink, make sure you have a plan.

“If you decide to drink, make sure that you have a plan. A designated driver, Uber, Lyft or a friend who can come and pick you up,” said Torrez.

The city of Scottsdale released a statement about the WM Phoenix Open. The statement states impaired driving is dangerous and the consequences can be tragic. However, it is easily preventable.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, if you are 21-years-old or older, you can receive a DUI charge if your blood alcohol concentrate (BAC) is above 0.08%.

If you are pulled over under suspicion of drinking under the influence, a chemical test will be administered. Refusal to take the test may result in a one-year suspension of your drivers license.

Torrez said, “Every driver that they stop, while impaired, is a life saved.”
