A Tucson artist is currently working on what he says will be the tallest mural in Arizona — a giant saguaro cactus that will span the 11-story Transamerica Building in the city’s downtown.

The 153-foot mural is a beautification project for downtown Tucson in partnership with Rio Nuevo.

While Pagac has made more whimsical paintings, like one mural of animals riding bikes, he was asked to keep things simple for this latest work.

Using scaffolding, Pagac is working on the design from the bottom up. He says people will be able to see the giant saguaro from various angles.

“So what's cool is you'll see it on the freeway as you're heading south. It'll be right there at your left. Anybody on the north side of town should be able to look down and see it. And so it'll make a really big visual impact, just the cityscape overall," he said.

He describes the appearance.

“It's going to look like a classical oil painting of a saguaro standing alone with a simple sky behind it so it kind of fades into the sky, behind it naturally, and then a few little prickly pears down at the base of it," he said.

The mural should be completed in the next few weeks.
