Glen Canyon off-road vehicle rule now delayed indefinitely

A rule that would restrict off-road vehicle use in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has been on hold since February thanks to a regulatory freeze from the Trump administration. That delay is now indefinite.

Initially, the plan was to start enforcing the new rule last month.

It would have curbed off-road vehicle traffic in tourist-heavy areas like Lone Rock Beach, starting near the end of March after an initial delay. But now, the National Park Service has pushed that off again until a newly filed lawsuit is resolved.

The state of Utah is leading a legal challenge to 2021 regulations that set stricter vehicle limits, which this new rule builds on. They argue it’s overreach that interferes with state interests and land access. Congress is also considering resolutions that could block the new rule altogether.

The NPS says it plans to keep the current 2021 rules the way they are until the legal ground they stand on is more solid.
