AZ officials are searching wrecks from massive I-40 pileup for missing South Korean tourists

Coconino County Sheriff's Department

Officials in northern Arizona are still searching for three women who went missing during a trip between Grand Canyon National Park and Las Vegas.

Coconino County sheriff’s officials said the South Korea Consulate notified them that the three missed their flight home. And the last signal from their cellphones was March 13, when they went missing. They were identified as Jiyeon Lee, 33; Taehee Kim, 59; and Junghee Kim, 54.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jon Paxton said police continue sifting through the wreckage of a 22-vehicle accident on I-40 that occurred that same day. Official say it was winter-weather related.

"That fire burned long and hot. Some of them are unrecognizable. They’ve got a tough job of trying to identify vehicles and try to determine who their owners are," he said.

The three women were driving a rented BMW with California plates. The Arizona Department of Public Safety shared a video of the burned and destroyed wreckage from the pileup, noting that 13 passenger vehicles were among the collisions.
