The Phoenix police chief has suspended without pay three officers involved in the arrest of a deaf man with cerebral palsy that made national headlines.

The man filed a lawsuit against the city earlier this month.

Tyron McAlpin’s lawyer says his deaf client couldn’t hear when an officer told him to stop.

Video shows McAlpin on the ground being punched and tased by officers after a trespassing suspect claimed McAlpin assaulted him.

The Phoenix Police Department says an internal review of the incident has been done, policy violations occurred and interim Chief Michael Sullivan has suspended three officers for 24 hours each without pay. Two of them must also do de-escalation training.

A statement from Sullivan says the decision reflects commitment to accountability.

The officers can appeal to the Civil Service Board.
