The last 2 summers brought record heat to the Valley. What does summer 2025 have in store?

The temperature reads 118 degrees on the sign on a Phoenix building complex on June 16, 2021.

The summers of 2024 and 2023 were the two hottest on record for Phoenix. Will extreme temperatures be back in the Valley in 2025?

Seasonal outlooks from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration do show that above-normal temperatures are likely for most of Arizona throughout the summer months.

But NOAA Warning Coordination Meteorologist Tom Frieders said there is one glimmer of hope this year — those same forecasts show Arizona will have between 40% and 60% chances for above-normal precipitation during monsoon season.

“We’re hoping the active monsoon could hopefully keep some of those temperatures in check a little bit and not have another record season after we had 2023 and 2024,” Frieders said. “So we’re hoping to keep those heat values below record levels this year.”

Frieders said the earlier part of the heat season could still be hotter than normal as a result of the warm, dry winter Phoenix had.
