The head of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, asking her to protect the Phoenix Police Department from federal oversight.

Last summer, the Department of Justice issued its findings from a 34-month investigation accusing Phoenix police of routinely violating constitutional and civil rights.

The threat of federal oversight in the form of a consent decree has been looming ever since.

In the letter to Bondi, board Chairman Thomas Galvin claimed the DOJ’s allegations were politically motivated.

He urged her to resume the previous Trump administration’s practice of limiting consent decrees, saying they cost taxpayers money and hinder law enforcement.

The city approved a series of reforms after the DOJ report and said those will continue, with or without federal intervention.
