Pope Francis will be laid to rest on Saturday as scores of world leaders, church officials and mourners look on.
Saturday's funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. local time in Vatican City (1 a.m. Arizona time).
It was held in St. Peter's Square, a large plaza directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
After the mass, the Vatican says, the pope's body was "taken into St. Peter's Basilica and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major where he will be buried."
Memorial mass for Pope Francis in Arizona
The Diocese of Phoenix plans to hold a special memorial Mass in honor of Francis.
Phoenix Bishop John Dolan will celebrate this Mass. In a statement, Dolan praised the pope and referred to him as a “man of accompaniment” who walked “alongside the poor, the marginalized, refugees, and the displaced.”
Earlier this week, Gov. Katie Hobbs issued an order for flags to fly at half-staff in remembrance of the Argentinian figure.
Black ribbons appeared on religious statues at the Phoenix Diocese campus as a sign of mourning the late pope.
The special event can also be watched on the CW7 or on the diocese’s Facebook and YouTube channel.
