Glendale just approved $600,000 to install high-tech moving radar systems in all of its police patrol cars. In a matter of months, it’ll be one of the first fully outfitted fleets in the Valley.

Glendale had some of the most traffic deaths in Maricopa County in 2023. City officials say that especially compared to the past few years, the recent rise in speed-related crashes and pedestrian deaths was a key influence.

The new systems represent an upgrade from traditional radar guns. They’re mounted on both ends of a patrol car, which allows them to track speeds from more directions. According to officials, the hope is that they’ll correspond with a dip in speeding-related accidents.

All 150 cars in Glendale’s fleet are expected to be outfitted with the new tech by the end of this summer.
