The oldest Gen Xers are turning 60 in 2025 — hard to believe if you happen to be one. In My So-Called Midlife, KJZZ takes a closer look at this generation and what they’re up to — or, rather, up against.
Gen Xers were coming of age when divorce rates were at an all-time high. One therapist shares how these experiences shaped this generation.
What Gen Xer doesn’t know someone who had two holidays or split their weekends between parents? Maybe it was you. And those experiences, for better or worse, have shaped Gen Xers and their attitudes toward divorce.
Victoria Muñoz is a licensed professional counselor who works in private practice.
" But the Gen Xers I know, I just see them as really resilient because we had to figure it out. And so we did."Victoria Muñoz
"And I'm also a Gen Xer," she admits. "What I see most is when a Gen Xer is in my office, and they are considering divorce, they are very thoughtful about this experience because often they do come from a family of divorce, so they are mindful of, how is this going to impact my children?"
They’re also mindful of what it means to be a step-parent. Keep in mind that Gen Xers are currently a sandwich generation. So not only are they raising their own kids and step-kids, they’re also taking care of parents and even step-parents.
"I know they put us in this lost child generation in a way, like the forgotten generation. But the Gen Xers I know, I just see them as really resilient because we had to figure it out. And so we did," Muñoz said.
And they are now, even when it’s exhausting, uncertain and ridiculously stressful.
