About half of U.S. adults approve of how President Donald Trump is handling transgender issues, according to a new poll by the Associated Press and NORC.
A push against the recognition and rights of transgender people, who make up about 1% of the nation's population, was a big part of Trump’s campaign and return to the White House.
Roughly two-thirds of adults agree with Trump that whether a person is a man or woman is determined at birth. When it comes to gender affirming care, about half are opposed to allowing government insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid to cover things like hormone therapy and surgery for transgender people over the age of 19. Roughly two-thirds oppose it for those under that age. There was more support for allowing transgender troops in the military.
