Went out of town this weekend? ADOT says to expect traffic delays as thousands of people come back to the Valley after Memorial Day weekend.

Getting an early start in the morning can save you from getting stuck in traffic. The busiest time for freeways is expected to be Monday afternoon.

“You’re gonna want to get a start earlier in the morning so that you arrive in the Phoenix area by early afternoon,” Doug Nintzel with ADOT.

He said leaving in the evening can also help prevent getting stuck in the travel rush hour. Some highways are expected to have more traffic.

“We’re going to see a much heavier traffic on southbound I-17, southbound state Route 87 and even the interstates coming back from California,” Nintzel said.

He reminds drivers that there are no freeway closures, but there may be reduced speeds from pre-existing construction zones.
