The city of Mesa announced Dan Butler will be its next chief of police.

A press release says Butler has worked at Mesa police for 25 years and is succeeding Chief Ken Cost, who is retiring at the end of the month.

The appointment was one of the first acts of new City Manager Scott Butler, who was sworn in this week.

Dan Butler, who is no relation, has been serving as executive assistant chief, overseeing the daily operations of the department’s nearly 1,400 officers and staff members.
