The Pinal County Attorney’s Office is vowing to deliver justice against the killer of an Apache Junction police officer.

Officer Gabriel Facio spent almost a week in critical condition before dying on Sunday.

Police say Facio was shot in the face while he and other members of the Apache Junction Police Department were pursuing a man who fled a traffic stop on foot.

At a news conference, Chief Michael Pooley said he recently rode along with Facio.

“He’s from Mexico. And he actually always wanted to be a police officer. So right after he got married, 25 years ago, he came to the United States with the whole intention of getting his citizenship to become a police officer,” Pooley said.

In a prepared condolence statement that did not mention the suspect, named Roger Nunez, Pinal County’s top prosecutor promised to hold Facio’s killer accountable.
