The city limits sign for Payson, Ariz., in July 2021.

State and local officials are voicing concerns about an uptick in fatal crashes on State Route 260 between Payson and Show Low.

Officials say there have been four fatal collisions in less than two weeks. One incident involved the death of an 8-year-old child as a car pulled onto the highway.

Bart Graves with the Arizona Department of Public Safety says there will be more troopers patrolling there indefinitely.

“We have added additional staffing to the area with the primary focus being on the Show Low and Payson area. Our goal is to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal collisions in that part of the state as a result of driver error," Graves said.

The area is known as a camping and recreation destination. Graves says traffic will be increased along SR 260 over the Fourth of July weekend.
