A disturbing incident took place Tuesday in Chicago in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ game against the White Sox.
"Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte seems to be in tears. Emotional about something – we’re not sure, but they’re all huddled around second base."
That’s D-Backs broadcasters Chris Garagiola and Josh Collmenter describing the seventh-inning scene. It was later revealed that a fan had taunted Marte about his mother’s death in a 2017 car crash, causing the emotional reaction.
Manager Torrey Lovullo, who consoled Marte on the field, spoke out after the game.
"It was a terrible moment. Um … fans are nasty, and fans go too far, sometimes," Lovullo said.
On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced that the fan is banned indefinitely from all MLB stadiums.
