Tucson Electric Power has let about 1,300 of its customers know they may experience temporary power outages — at some point — under a new plan to help mitigate wildfire risk.
TEP spokesperson Joseph Barrios says this would be in limited areas during extreme conditions and circumstances.
“This is a measure of last resort for us, and it’s intended to prevent conditions that could cause a wildfire. It’s intended to protect the very communities that are concerned about this," Barrios said.
The company says high winds and other dangerous weather could cause debris to hit powerlines and cause a fast-spreading fire. The last community meeting scheduled this month for affected residents is at 3 p.m. Thursday.
TEP provides a tool for residents to find out if they are in a “risk prone area for wildfires.”
