The community center in Gila Bend recently completed renovations with a $1 million grant from Maricopa County’s Community Development Block Grant program.
The community center offers meals to seniors and disabled adults and food distribution, among other services.
“We certainly don't want to have residents be without food, shelter and water for an extended period of time. So these upgrades allow us to better meet the needs of local residents," said Katherine Valenzuela, the town manager.
Valenzuela says Gila Bend reached out for funding during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow for more space between clients and staff.
“So that certainly was an upgrade that was much appreciated and, you know, again, allowed us to make the best use of our space," she said.
Renovations to the location included 800 square feet of additional space and updates to utilities.
