The 1.6 million-acre Kaibab National Forest stretches across the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon, encompassing part of the nation's largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest.

Fire restrictions have been implemented across Kaibab National Forest in northern Arizona.

The majority of the forest is under Stage 1 fire restrictions, which means fires can only be used in developed campgrounds.

Stricter limitations were put on the Williams Ranger District, which means no fires unless they are propane fueled.

U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Matt Switzer says Kaibab is often one of the last to put fire restrictions in place.

"We’re at a higher elevation so we don’t see the conditions a lot of other forests see as early as they see it," Switzer said.

With the Fourth of July weekend coming up, Switzer said it’s illegal to use fireworks in national forests.
