The death toll in Texas continues to rise as a result of flash flooding from the Guadalupe River. Remnants of a tropical storm in Mexico contributed to the deadly conditions taking place in central Texas.

At the center of controversy are whether or not effects of cutting funding from weather services impacted their ability to provide information about extreme weather.

Arizona State University climatologist Randy Cerveny says the flooding events bring into question the support given to weather services.

“We need to take a really long hard look as to whether it is a public service to save people as opposed to saving tax dollars, maybe, by cutting a particular service. That’s a debate that I’m afraid is ongoing right now,” he said.

Cerveny says flash flood warnings were sent in the early morning hours.

As searchers continue to look for victims in the deadly flash flooding in Texas, officials are answering questions about the weather forecasts ahead of and during the storm.
