APS, SRP report highest-ever energy demand on 118-degree day in metro Phoenix

Both of the Valley’s major electric providers saw their highest ever energy demand Wednesday as the temperature soared to 118 degrees.

Salt River Project delivered a record 8,324 megawatts between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Arizona Public Service delivered an unprecedented 8,527 megawatts between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

SRP and APS have seen record loads during the past two summers, and both utilities had projected that this summer’s demand would break records yet again.

But for APS, Wednesday's peak load was even higher than the 8,491 megawatts that the utility had expected this summer’s record would be.

On extremely hot days, SRP, APS and TEP can override the settings on some Arizona customers' smart thermostats to turn air conditioners down and reduce strain on the grid.

The utilities say extreme summer temperatures drive these records as air conditioners across the Valley work overtime. Population growth and an increase in commercial users like data centers have also increased demand.

Energy bills soar this time of year, too. APS and SRP both offer savings plans to encourage conservation and bill assistance programs for qualifying customers. Utility assistance is also available through local community action agencies.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The story has been updated to correct the day the Valley's major electric providers saw their highest ever energy demand.
