The city of Mesa has announced the appointment of three new assistant city managers. One of them is the city’s former police chief Ken Cost. Cost retired at the end of June after serving six years as chief.

According to City Manager Scott Butler, Cost applied for the new role shortly after announcing his retirement.

“He has deep roots with our community and with community groups that he's worked with in his 30 years at the Police Department. So he'll be able to bring those relationships in that perspective up to the city manager’s office," Butler said.

Butler says Cost will oversee police and fire, but that his team is still working on assignments for each new assistant city manager.

The two other appointees are Marc Heirshberg, deputy Mesa city manager, and Brent Stoddard, who will be leaving Glendale’s management office.

Butler says their appointments fill existing vacant positions.
