The Phoenix Zoo gets fewer visitors in the summer, and for the third year in a row, the park is raising funds through an online auction.

It’s called Bidders for Critters and runs through until noon July 29.

Auction items come from local artists and businesses and include event passes, artwork and travel packages.

Linda Hardwick, director of communications at the zoo, says 100% of the proceeds will be kept in-house.

"It goes back right into the operating costs. It goes back into caring for the beautiful grounds that we have, and protecting those endangered and threatened species that we care for on zoo grounds," Hardwick said.

According to last year's annual report, the zoo's budget is about $40 million, and most of the revenue comes from park admissions and memberships.

The Phoenix Zoo is a non-profit animal sanctuary and research hub for preserving natural habitats and wildlife. Its educational and conservation programs are the largest expense.

Hardwick says the auction helps supplement their budget.

"The Bidders for Critters is just kind of a fun way for people to support the zoo during the summer. We've only done it for three years," Hardwick said.

The wish list created by the zoo keepers and veterinary staff is another way for the public to give. It includes toys, hoof oil and other equipment.
