The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is using AI to help identify human remains. It’s the first time the agency has used the tool to do so.
A Tucson Police Department detective drew the sketch of a man whose remains were spotted near the San Joaquin Trailhead in Tucson. An open-source AI program then converted that sketch into a more realistic depiction of the deceased individual currently named John Doe.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says the technology can help solve crimes, locate missing people and be more efficient with resources.
“So we felt like it's just another tool and we're asking you, the public, to take a look at this and see if anybody out there recognizes this individual and if they would call us," he said.
He says the department may use it to revisit previous cases.
“This is Day 1. This is a step for us, and we will look at it, and I'm sure there will be some tweaks that have to be made in that regard," he said.
Nanos also says they could use the technology to develop police reports.
