Class schedules at Maryvale High School were changed Wednesday so students can receive grief counseling after a classmate was stabbed to death on campus Tuesday.

Phoenix police say an officer working on campus was told there had been an assault in a classroom and he detained one of the male students involved.

Firefighters and more officers located another student who was stabbed multiple times. He died at a hospital.

“As a mother myself, I am grieving for the mother, the siblings, the entire family and friends. And will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation,” said Thea Andrade, superintendent of the Phoenix Union High School District.

People with photos or videos of the assault are being asked to share them with investigators.

Roughly 2,700 students are enrolled at Maryvale High, according to US News and World Report.
