KJZZ wins 5 Arizona Press Club awards for reporting in 2024

KJZZ

KJZZ has won five awards in the Arizona Press Club’s 2024 journalism contest.

The announcement was made by the Press Club earlier this month.

Gabriel Pietrorazio brought home three awards. He won first and second in the Short-Form Audio Storytelling category.

Drawing inspiration from Diné melodies old and new, the Delbert Anderson Quartet brought its jazz, funk and groove-infused selections to Scottsdale on Saturday night.
The all-Native American basketball tournament in North America drew a record number of teams and players to Phoenix.

Pietrorazio also won the Arts, Food, Beverage Reporting and Criticism category for a collection of stories that focused on Indigenous food issues.

Mutton is a staple in Diné society, but in the Navajo town of Cameron, fear over uranium contamination has raised questions of whether it’s even safe to consume this local meat.
Michael Kotutwa Johnson is conducting new agricultural research at the University of Arizona to find solutions and combat environmental trends, affecting even some of the most resilient Hopi dry farmers due to climate change.

Wayne Schutsky took second place in John Kolbe Award for Political Reporting for his continuing coverage of the bizarre saga involving Arizona's Green Party and outsiders' attempts to manipulate the party to their own advantage.

The Show won second place in the Long-Form Audio Storytelling category for their Last Resorts series — a nostalgic look at some of the Valley's most historic luxury resorts, with an eye, also, on what the future holds for those properties and the industry.

From motor courts to luxury hotels, KJZZ's The Show explores how the resort industry has transformed Arizona.

News director Chad Snow joined the KJZZ newsroom in 2016.
Senior digital editor Sky Schaudt joined KJZZ in 2015. Prior to working at KJZZ, Schaudt was a digital news editor at azcentral.com for nearly a decade.
