The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says law enforcement found two dozen guinea pigs at the center of an animal theft investigation.
Officials say 25 guinea pigs were stolen from an animal rescue at a home in Marana, Arizona, early last week.
In a joint effort, the Phoenix Police Department served a search warrant at a Phoenix residence leading to recovery of the animals, Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release Saturday.
Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Angelica Carrillo says two 14-year-old girls and one girl’s mother are suspects.
“This is an active investigation. We do know that criminal charges are pending. That of course will be up to the Pima County Attorney’s Office but possible charges include burglary, possession of stolen property and contributing to the delinquency of a minor,” she said.
One guinea pig died prior to being recovered by authorities, police said.
The animals were returned to the animal rescue, officials said.
