Immigration authorities say a Honduran man is hospitalized in stable condition after being wounded while trying to flee a traffic stop with ICE officers Wednesday morning in north Phoenix. The incident led to snarled traffic on Interstate 17.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says at around 4 a.m. near I-17 and Dove Valley Road, officers pulled over a Honduran man without authorization to be in the country.

Authorities say Jose Garcia-Sorto stopped at first, but then pulled away as ICE officers approached. An officer who was reportedly in Garcia’s path fired their gun twice and hit Garcia’s vehicle.

The officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Garcia is being treated for an unidentified wound.

The incident follows reports of a leadership change at the local ICE field office.
