The Phoenix City Council has approved a $5.2 million lawsuit settlement in connection with a police vehicle having struck a child. The settlement stems from June of 2023, when court records say a Phoenix police vehicle was speeding and hit a toddler.
The child was reportedly in a roadway in a neighborhood south of downtown. They survived and are now about 5 years old.
Anna Hernandez was the only Phoenix City Council member to comment on the settlement.
“Our city has a responsibility to make sure this doesn’t happen again. I'm just very sorry that this happened and that this family will be forever impacted,” she said.
The settlement is the city’s second this month involving a claim against Phoenix police.
The council also approved a $1.2 million payout to children of a man police shot in 2019 who they mistook for another suspect.
