Pedestrians in Arizona are nearly twice as likely to be killed in a road collision compared to the rest of the country.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s latest study looked at crash data from 2018 through 2022. The report found that Arizona stood out for its high fatality rates among males. Julian Paredes is a spokesperson with AAA.

"Per capita was six pedestrian deaths per 100,000 in Arizona compared to 3.2 per 100,000 for the rest of the country, so six compared to 3.2," Paredes said.

Among females, the fatality rate was much lower but still exceeded national figures. As for why Arizona tops the list, "Arizona is just a larger, more spread out state. So generally speaking, people here drive more, drive faster and pedestrians also have to walk longer and further distances," Paredes said.
