Phoenix City Council is set to consider new restrictions on providing medical care in city parks.
The new proposed ordinance would prohibit any person, group or organization from sponsoring or advertising medical treatment events in parks unless it is authorized by the city. It would also prohibit groups from using parks for needle exchange programs or for distribution of other materials meant to reduce harm from drug use.
The ordinance includes exceptions for first responders or recognized volunteer organizations responding to emergencies. And it allows for distribution of the opioid overdose reversal drug, Naloxone.
The council is scheduled to vote on the ordinance Wednesday.
