A controversial former second in command at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has died.
David Hendershott was chief deputy under former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
A brief online obituary says Hendershott lived in Peoria, but does not give a cause of death.
Federal civil rights investigators found in 2011 that Hendershott used his post to retaliate against local attorneys and judges critical of the Sheriff’s Office.
Hendershott resigned before Arpaio could fire him, according to the Arizona Republic, after having worked for about 30 years at the Sheriff’s Office.
