Christmas trees are a big part of holiday celebrations. But they can also pose a serious fire threat.

Phoenix fire captain DJ Lee says if you have a real tree, it’s important to closely monitor it and keep it away from fireplaces and candles. And to quickly dispose of the tree after the holiday.

"If you can really feel the dryness of it, it’s probably a good time to start getting — being prepared to get — to dispose of it at a proper location," Lee says.

Beyond dry trees, Lee says other factors that can heighten danger around the holidays are unclean chimneys and leaving candles unattended.
