Ahead of New Year’s celebrations this week, AAA asks Arizona partygoers to plan ahead before they get intoxicated.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that New Year’s Eve is among the most dangerous nights of the year for car accidents. Especially for accidents involving drunk drivers.
“If you are going to enjoy some alcohol just have a Lyft, have a Waymo, have an alternative form of transportation. There’s really no excuse for it nowadays, lots of people on the road so yeah want to make sure everybody gets home from the holiday safely,” AAA’s Arizona spokesperson Julian Paredes said.
In Arizona, a DUI carries multiple penalties including license suspension and jail time.
Paredes also advised drivers not to make overly long trips and risk exhaustion. He adds some tips for staying alert, apart from blasting the radio.
“Even just cracking the window open a little bit can help you take a little bit of the focus off of your tiredness and just a little bit of a distraction. The best bet is to not drive tired at all but a little bit of coffee, a little bit of extra noise might actually help,” he said.
For especially long trips, Paredes asks drivers to consider making overnight stops or pull over if they get tired.
