Every New Year’s Day, animal shelters brace for an influx of lost animals — as fireworks can cause pets to panic and flee their homes. And as expected, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is busy with an influx.

Kim Powell is with the agency.

"We’re going into the weekend people might have leftover fireworks and they might still be shooting them off. So this may linger for another week or so as well," Powell said.

She asks those with lost pets to post both physical and digital flyers and come down to the shelter to ensure lost-pet forms are filed correctly.

Powell said they are also busy with adoptions.
