Neighborhood groups accuse the Mexican consul in Phoenix of joining a publicity campaign by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The consul says there is no such thing.
The beef is laid out in a recent letter to the Mexican Consul from Neighborhood Defense Committees.
Members say the consul appears to be aligning with Sheriff Jerry Sheridan. And they are upset that the consul and Mexico’s U.S. ambassador met with Sheridan last September.
In a statement, the consul said meeting with authorities is a standard part of his job to make sure Mexicans are treated fairly. And he has emphasized to Sheridan the importance of respecting the bounds between local policing and immigration enforcement, which the sheriff’s office is legally barred from doing.
