The Goldwater Institute is supporting Maricopa County’s bid to end independent oversight of the Sheriff’s Office in connection with a decade-long racial profiling case. The conservative group is focused on the cost of the court-appointed monitor.
Monitor fees for keeping watch over the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, according to Judge Murray Snow, totaled about $28 million combined for fiscal years 2014 through 2024.
But the Goldwater Institute wants more details, a chance to review the monitor’s invoices, itemized accounting of services and team member salaries.
So the group is urging Snow to rethink his decade old decision to seal those details. The monitor in question watches over Sheriff’s Office efforts to reform internal affairs and end bias against Latino drivers.
