Why speed cameras are coming back to Phoenix after 6 years

Speed cameras will be back in Phoenix next month as part of the city’s road safety action plan adopted in 2022.

Just a few years before that plan, the City Council had voted to stop using those cameras.

In 2019, before the pandemic took hold, roads remained busy and Phoenix just voted to stop having red-light or speed enforcement cameras. One council member noted at the time that there wasn’t enough data to understand if the cameras were helpful.

Now, nine speed cameras are being set up at corridors that the city says have "histories of speed-involved crashes.” An additional eight are going in certain school zones.

Matt Wilson is with the city's street transportation department.

"I think we have made a commitment here both in the department and city-wide to be more cognizant of the safety concerns that exist on our roads," Wilson said. "The number of serious injury and fatality collisions have prompted a need to do more to address the problem."

He mentions the city's Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan.

“Photo safety cameras are a proven counter measure at slowing speeds on our roads and preventing collisions. As part of that commitment, our City Council authorized the program to return," Wilson said.

Red light cameras have also been approved to return, though there is no timeline.
