A memorial service for a man mistakenly killed by Phoenix police in late January is scheduled for Tuesday. The police chief recently apologized to the family.
The Phoenix police chief says a man who was fatally shot by officers in late January was not the suspect reported in an emergency call.
Chief Matt Giordano says he is deeply sorry to the family and loved ones of Christian Rendon, who was shot and killed by Phoenix police on Jan. 26.
Giordano also says Rendon had actually disarmed a suspect.
Phoenix police initially said people told the first arriving officer to go into the house because someone was shooting. An update said the officer was told children were being shot.
The officer saw a struggle through the open front door and fired one rifle round.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating. Giordano says an internal review will follow.
