Hikers and bikers who use Dove Valley Trail in Scottsdale may want to consider other options while the city does some work to reduce wildfire risk and improve emergency access.

Work on the Dove Valley Trail began earlier this month and is expected to last about three to four weeks.

Jenna Kohl, McDowell Sonoran Preserve director, said the city is taking a proactive approach because of our wet winter that resulted in more vegetation — and when that fuel dries out, it can feed a fire.

“So the scope of the project is strategic vegetation management. So that's removing dead and ladder fuels, trimming trees and cacti and limbing native trees along Dove Valley Trail, which is, like I mentioned, one of the preserve’s primary control features," she said.

Scottsdale officials recommend visitors keep an eye out if they choose to hike, bike or enjoy the area. The work will involve chippers and mechanical equipment.
