A newly deployed speed monitoring camera was battered and pushed over Tuesday, less than two weeks after it was installed.

The vandalized camera was one of 17 placed throughout Phoenix in late February, as part of a city safety campaign that aims to alter driver behavior and supplement police traffic enforcement.

Penalties and fines for damaged speed cameras would be decided by Phoenix Municipal Court and depend on severity of damage, cost of repair and if the culprit is a repeat offender, according to a city spokesperson.

The city says under its contract, any repairs to the cameras will be paid for by the contractor who installed the equipment.
