Attorney General Kris Mayes joins DEA Special Agent in Charge Apolonio Ruiz, Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan, and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Director Dawn Mertz to announce the results of a major multi-agency drug operation targeting criminal organizations operating in Arizona communities on March 18, 2026.

Local, state and federal law enforcement are hailing the results of a monthslong drug crackdown dubbed Operation Mechanic. Authorities seized nearly 2,000 pounds of drugs.

Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said the operation was driven by worries that Arizona is serving as a drug tunnel to other states.

“There are some ignorant people out there that say, ‘Drugs are a victimless crime.’ I’m here to tell you that drug dealers are a direct threat to our republic and the fabric of our society,” Sheridan said.

Authorities also seized firearms, vehicles, cash and cryptocurrency. Plus heroin, marijuana and spice, a synthetic drug intended to mimic the psychoactive effects of cannabis. Nearly three dozen people were arrested.

Attorney General Kris Mayes said her office is committed to dismantling organized crime networks that traffic drugs.

“We seized nearly 1,750 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 113 pounds of cocaine, over 11 pounds of fentanyl and pills,” Mayes said.
